3 OFFSHORE WIND FARMS AND 2 TIDAL DEVELOPMENTS IN NORMANDY

With three offshore wind farms and 2 tidal energy projects in the pipeline, Normandy ranks in a strategic position in the French programmes for the development of MREs and energy diversification.

In July 2011, under its National Programme for Offshore Wind Energy, the French government issued a first public tender to identify the firms to be put in charge of the construction and operation of the first offshore wind farms.

EOLIEN MARITIME FRANCE, an EDF EN / wpd / GE (Alstom) Consortium, was the successful bidder for the development of 2 farms off the coasts of Courseulles-sur-Mer and Fécamp.

A third offshore wind farm is planned off Dieppe-Le Tréport, to be developed by the ENGIE / EDP Renewables Consortium with the support of  Neoen Marine and Adwen, as the successful bidders of a second public procurement tender in May 2014.

The Cotentin area is where the first two tidal energy pilot farms will be located. In total, 11 turbines will be immersed off The Hague and the Channel Islands between now and 2017/2018. EDF EN / DCNS / OpenHydro will install 7 of them and ENGIE / GE (Alstom), the 4 others.

These two consortia will also be tasked with the development of 3 other French wind farms off Saint-Brieuc, Saint-Nazaire and the Yeu-Noirmoutier Islands. They have already announced the construction of a number of production units in Cherbourg et au Havre, to manufacture parts and assemble the turbines to be installed in the 6 French offshore wind farms.
